This was a great Halloween hike - creepy, but great. The buildings you will encounter look like someone just picked up and left a few months ago. Furniture scattered in some of the homes and some random household appliances hidden deep in the woods. Then there's the huge building that appears to have burned down some years ago.
Placed right next to the railroad tracks, its history is very clear. (And reading about Lester on Wikipedia afterwards was super interesting, too!) That Halloween day we went it was raining like you wouldn't believe, which made the three mile round-trip quite damp.
But the trails were easy to follow and not strenuous. It's a beautiful walk, really. You walk on the road, through some open fields, alongside a river, and then over the railroad tracks. Be careful on the drive out to Lester, though, because the last couple miles of the drive are really rough. The road has a lot of potholes, which makes for a bumpy ride.
Once you reach the town, explore into the woods, too, not just in the clearly visible buildings. The intersection of nature and the old appliances from this ghost town are fascinating. They have started to grow into one, and there are old pieces from these old buildings scattered all over the woods (like an old washing machine).
The only sketchy part was when the building I was standing in started swaying back and forth in the wind. At that point, we decided it was time to head out before the ghost town made us into ghosts.
Get out there, enjoy this one.
